‘TV Patrol’ celebrates convergence of journalism, social media
MANILA, Philippines – “TV Patrol” gathered 50 of its loyal followers on Monday for a two-fold celebration –the 25 years of broadcast of “TV Patrol,” and the contributing power of the social networking generation in broadcast journalism.

Following a series of trivia contests across its social media platforms, more than 50 "TVPeeps" were gathered at the headquarters of ABS-CBN for day-long activities including a studio tour.
After doing a “sampol” of their most creative “TV Patrol” voice projection, the TVPeeps sat down for merienda for a chance to socialize beyond being friendly tweeps, Facebook friends and fellow live-chatters online.
Culminating in a meet-and-greet with ABS-CBN news personalities, the “TVPeeps Grand Eyeball” had participants interact with ABS-CBN news personalities, including news correspondent Sol Aragones, Star Patroller Gretchen Fullido, “TV Patrol” executive producer Joey Caburnida, news and current affairs head Ging Reyes, and “TV Patrol” anchor "Kabayan" Noli de Castro.
Aragones reminded the TVPeeps of the importance of their role in citizen-driven news mobilization.
“Malaking bagay sa ‘TV Patrol’ ang Bayan Patrollers lalo na magkakaroon ulit ng eleksyon, ‘di ba, ‘yung ‘Boto Mo iPatrol Mo,’” she said.
Vote-monitoring during national elections is only one of the many targets of social vigilance through technology. Reyes reminded her fellow “news junkies” that with the ever-growing accessibility of information through social media, taking on a global perspective is in order.
“It’s very important to keep ourselves informed, to keep ourselves abreast of the latest developments in our country and in the world,” Reyes said.
“Kumbaga hindi lang natin dapat sinusubaybayan ang mga nangyayari dito sa ating bansa, [dapat] maging ang nangyayari sa paligid ng Pilipinas. Kailangan maging global ang perspective natin.”
Recounting decades of newscast, de Castro told the TVPeeps that news content has not changed, but means to access, share and generate it have.
“Simula pa lang ng ‘TV Patrol,’ kaya nga sumikat ang police report because napakaraming crimes noon, ‘di ba? Hanggang ngayon naman hindi nagbago,” he said.
“Tinanong nga ako, ‘May pagkakaiba ba ang ‘TV Patrol’ noon at ngayon?’ Sabi ko, ‘wala, teknolihiya lang.’”
