Maricel Laxa to lead forum on anti-bullying
MANILA, Philippines -- Television host and parenting expert Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan will lead a forum on anti-bullying to be held at the Malayan High School of Science (MHSS) in Manila on Saturday.
During the seminar, titled "Building a Safe Environment for Young Minds," Laxa-Pangilinan will discuss the nature of bullying and ways on how parents can protect their children from such social harms.
In a statement, MHSS administrative officer and registrar Ferdinand Geronimo said a strong partnership between the school and the parents is ideal in supporting students' optimal growth.
"Our forum aims to encourage more active participation from the parents in nurturing their children not just academically but holistically. We want to empower parents," Geronimo said.
"Bullying is a serious issue among the youth today," he added.
Last year, a lawmaker filed an anti-bullying bill after his own son was bullied in school. Aurora Rep. Sonny Angara's Anti-Bullying Act defines bullying as "a severe and repeated harmful act" done by a student against another, whether written, verbal or electronic expression, or a physical act or gesture, or any combination directed at another student and placing him or her under reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm or damage to property."
Under the measure, schools that fail to impose such measures will face administrative sanctions from the Education Secretary.
Adults are not covered by the provisions in the bill.
The "Building a Safe Environment for Young Minds" seminar will be held on March 17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the MHSS audio-visual room. The forum is open to all parents. For inquiries, call the MHSS admissions office at (02) 562-8516 or 0918-990-6477, or e-mail email@example.com.
