Binay wants stricter gun laws
MANILA, Philippines – Vice-President Jejomar Binay on Thursday joined calls for stricter enforcement of gun laws in the wake of the death of 7-year-old Stephanie Nicole Ella due to a stray bullet.
In a statement, Binay said gun control laws must be enforced to the letter.
"We have enough laws to penalize but the problem has always been in the enforcement of the laws, especially those on loose firearms. That is the challenge for the Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies," he said.
Binay said the PNP should exert all efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
“This incident should not be allowed to become just another statistic,” he said, echoing President Benigno Aquino III’s sentiment that Ella’s death was senseless.
Stephanie Nicole was hit by a stray bullet in the head while she and her family were outside their house celebrating the New Year's Eve.
She passed away at 2:26 p.m. Wednesday.
An autopsy on her remains was conducted by members of the Philippine National Police - Crime Laboratory at around 11 p.m. Wednesday.
The PNP-Crime Laboratory said the report will be released after five working days.
