1 killed, 2 hurt in Maguindanao ambush

COTABATO CITY, Philippines (UPDATE) -- A security escort was killed by unidentified armed men along the national highway of Lebak-Cotabato in Sitio Kibungcog, Kibucay in the town of Upi in Maguindanao past 3 p.m. Saturday.

The victim, a certain PFC Enerio, was onboard a private vehicle with Justina Parian and Rhona Parian when the suspects fired at them along KM-26 in Sitio Kibungcog.

The two Parians were rushed to a hospital after sustaining injuries in the ambush.

The perpetrators escaped after going to the eastern part of Upi.

Authorities believe the ambush was part of a foiled abduction attempt, as Justina is a businesswoman and has already received kidnap threats in the past.

Upi Police also identified one of the alleged kidnappers, who was killed during the exchange of gunfire with authorities during the pursuit operations.

He was identified through his PhilHealth card as Impaw Musa Datuayon, a resident of Muti Guindulungan town in Maguindanao.

The police also recovered empty shells of M16, M14 and a 45-caliber gun.

Datuayon’s remains are still unclaimed in a funeral parlor ni Upi.

Meanwhile, authorities have warned businessmen in the area to be cautious at all times.

This was the second foiled kidnapping in Upi, after a foiled attempt last January on a bakery owner. – With a report from Lerio Bompat, ABS-CBN News Central Mindanao
