'Pacquiao need not fight Mayweather'
MANILA, Philippines – Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao is not required to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr., according to boxing coach Robert Garcia.
Garcia, who trains Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr., said both fighters can look for other opponents and still earn much.
“They could do so much on their own, why make them fight? There’s so much money out there for the whole world, for different promoters,” he said in Examiner.com.
Garcia added that fighting Mayweather can do more harm than good on Pacquiao’s career.
Garcia, who was voted as The Ring magazine's "2011 Trainer of the Year," said Pacquiao’s difficulties against Juan Manuel Marquez showed the Filipino boxer’s weaknesses against counterpunchers.
“The way Pacquiao looked in his last fight and the way Mayweather’s been looking, I truly believe Mayweather would beat Pacquiao,” he said.
Despite suffering a near-upset from Marquez in their third face-off, Pacquiao was able to eke out a majority decision victory.
Pacquiao was actually looking forward to meet Mayweather in the ring in early 2012.
Mayweather’s legal troubles, however, have prevented the fight from being made.
